Burkina Faso’s junta leader, Ibrahim Traoré, has described democracy as “slavery” while defending his country’s current direction.

Speaking during an interview marking one year of his Popular Progressive Revolution, Traoré said Burkina Faso has achieved “total independence” from Western democratic ideals.

He explained that his government is focused on national sovereignty and economic freedom through anti-imperialism.

Traoré also made it clear that his leadership is moving away from traditional democratic systems in favour of revolutionary action.

His comments have stirred reactions as debates grow over governance and freedom in the region.
